Where there’s smoke... Beemer’s Volunteer Fire Department made use of a perfect day Sunday for a practice burn. Firemen set an hold house on fire at the farm place of the late Marcella Belling, located on County Road 15, about 3.5 miles from Beemer. Basic fire practice, including entering a burning house, was conducted during the controlled burn.

First truck was good investment By Bev Wieler West Point News Reporter / Seventy-seven years ago Eddie Doescher took a chance and sold the only vehicle he owned and bought a truck. It marked the beginning of Doescher Transfer Company, located in Beemer.
Doescher’s family acknowledges  that his initial investment proved to be a good one.

Cemetery directories completed for Memorial Day By Bev Wieler West Point News Reporter / Lance Parsons searched for several years to find where his father was buried. He had lost contact with him through the years and knew he had died.
At about the same time as he was searching, Lance was also doing work on a directory for Mount Hope Cemetery in West Point.

Fantastic finish It wasn’t by chance, but rather hard work and dedication that Bluejay senior Emily Petz evolved into a star sprinter.
It was also her love for the sport that allowed Petz to place a giant exclamation mark on her Central Catholic track career with four medals in four events at the 2013 state track and field meet held this past weekend at Omaha Burke.

Memorial Day program Monday

St. Michael’s Cemetery will be the setting for this year’s Memorial Day program in West Point Monday.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. with the presentation of the colors by VFW Post #4912 and American Legion Post #70.
Giving this year’s address will be Bill Pook, Region 5/6 Emergency Management Director and a retired United States Air Force Master Sergeant.
He served 4 years active duty with two temporary  duty (TDY) tours to Thailand and Vietnam. In 1990 during Desert Shield, Bill re-enlisted with the 440th Air Reserve.
The welcome will be given by Gary Kaup, and the Pledge of Allegiance will be led by local  Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Gloria Wellman will lead the singing of  The Star-Spangled Banner.

County zoning administrator’s job split from highway office

Cuming County will be looking for a new zoning administrator to begin July 1.
The Cuming County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 at a special meeting last week to make that a separate job.
The job is currently shared by the County Road Superintendent Leona Meier, who has handled both positions for several years.
Underway is a countywide housing study and with it, steps to upgrade the county’s comprehensive plan and rural zoning laws.
The board feels it is better to have someone focusing solely on zoning issues during and after the comprehensive plan and zoning laws are upgraded.

Pool set to open this Saturday

Weather permitting, the West Point swimming pool will open for another season of fun Saturday.
The city switched to a liquid chlorine system this year, and that equipment is up and running.
The pool is open 1:30-5 p.m. each day, and 6:30-9 p.m. each day but Tuesday. Tuesday the pool is open nights from 7-9 p.m. for family swim.

Lawmakers pass state new budget

Nebraska lawmakers passed a package of bills Monday that make up the state’s $7.8 billion two-year budget.
The budget represents a 5.2 percent increase in spending over the previous biennium.
The bills passed with overwhelming support, but Sens. Beau McCoy and Pete Pirsch of Omaha and Charlie Janssen of Fremont voted against the main budget bill and a bill to appropriate funds for state construction projects.

Three-year plan to upgrade technology in works at WPPS

Technology, more technology, and then some was a main topic at Monday night’s West Point Public Schools’ Board of Education meeting.
Andy Boell, Technology Director for the WPPS district, updated the board on where the three schools – West Point-Beemer Jr.-Sr. High, West Point Elementary and Beemer Elementary – are at technology wise and laid out a three-year plan that gets the district closer to having a computer available for each student, at least in the junior-senior high school.
The one-on-one initiative –  which provides a laptop or computer for each student – undertaken in some schools isn’t as easily accomplished in the WPPS district because of the number of students involved: 826 this year.
