Lonnie and Twyla Schultz expected some traits of theirs to pass to their four children, but they didn’t expect to see their three sons wearing the same work uniform as their father.
10 local EMT’s earn Code Save award Ten members of West Point Rescue received Code Save Awards at their monthly meeting last Wednesday.
The award is presented to EMS providers who saved a life during CPR and/or defibrillation. It is presented by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, EMS Program.
Arlington shuts down Seniors West Point’s lack of offense left the American Legion Senior baseball team on the short end of a shutout setback to Arlington, losing 2-0 Monday evening at Anderson Field.
West Point managed just three hits off winning pitcher Mitch Thompson. Derek Grovijohn singled in the first inning, Cody Fischer in the third, and Trent Ortmeier in the fourth.

Tornado waring issued!

Tornado warning in effect until 8:15 tonight (Friday) for southern Cuming County or so and does include city of West Point according to National Weather Service... storm capable of producing tornado and hail 1 to 2 inches in diameter.. storm moving east, southeast at about 25 mph... no tornado has been spotted, but strong rotation detected in clouds west of West Point

State aid numbers still look good for local school district

The fluctuating state aid projections for Nebraska schools changed for what should be the last time for the 2013-2014 school year, West Point Public School’s Board of Education learned Monday during its regular monthly meeting.
The news is sill positive for WPPS, but Superintendent Dr. Ted DeTurk noted that a pending study of the state aid formula may not lead to good news in future years.
DeTurk said it’s unknown what adjustments state lawmakers will recommend or how they will impact the district’s state aid.
For the coming year, WPPS, which includes the schools in West Point and Beemer, stands to receive $302,958 in state aid. That’s and increase of $142,5012 from what it received this year.

Hospital patients asked to arrive earlier on first visit to help with new record system

St. Francis Memorial Hospital patients will be asked to be patient beginning next week when they register.
That’s because starting Monday, the hospital will be launching its new Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system (the clinic will switch to the system in the near future).
The new system, McKesson Paragon, offers computerized provider order entry, nursing documentation and a new registration and scheduling system.
The new system will replace paper records for all patients.
Because of the switch, the hospital is asking every patient — new or old — to come at least 20 minutes early for their appointments, starting Monday.

Sales taxes add up to more than $600,000

The local option sales taxes being collected in the communities of West Point, Wisner, Beemer and Bancroft continue to add up.
According to the Nebraska State Treasurer’s office, the total collected in the six months that the new taxes took effect is $611,698.
It needs to be noted that the City of West Point’s local sales tax has been in effect for longer than that, but the tax was increased from 1 percent to 1.5 percent as of Oct. 1, 2012. Dollar figures in this story are what each of the communities has received over six months, October through March.

Cable One to upgrade infrastructure, services

West Point residents will soon see more Cable One service trucks in town.
That’s because, beginning next week, the company will begin work to upgrade the services it provides in West Point.
General Manager Mike Drahota said Cable One is working to better serve its customers by investing nearly $60 million in an infrastructure upgrade which will provide its customers with enhanced speed, reliability and quality in their Internet and cable service.  
The company will spend more than $1 million on this project in communities served from Norfolk.
