Pool prep continues, splashing to resume May 25...
West Point City employees Jim Peatrowsky and Dennis Wordekemper (not pictured) were finishing up some crack caulking around the swimming pool this morning (Wednesday). The pool was filled Monday and Tuesday. From now through Friday, May 24, lifeguards will be vacuuming dirt that settles at the bottom of the pool and making sure the water’s pH balance is correct.

West Point-Beemer’s Mackenzie Berg turns a little red while principal DJ Weddle shares a story about Mackenzie during Sunday’s graduation ceremony. It was a special day for Berg. Not only did she receive her high school diploma, it was also Berg’s birthday. WP-B had 62 graduates.
27 area kids off to Burke
A total of 27 area track athletes qualified for the 2013 State Track & Field meet this Friday and Saturday at Omaha Burke.
Qualifiers from each area school include: West Point-Beemer (3), Central Catholic (19), Scribner-Snyder (4) and Bancroft-Rosalie (1).

Henry Popken - February 16, 2011
Henry B. Popken, 85, of West Point, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, at St. Francis Memorial Hospital. Funeral Mass was Friday, Feb. 12, 2011, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Frank Lordemann officiated. Burial with military honors was at St. Michael’s Cemetery.Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Central Catholic, Guardian Angels, or St. Joseph’s Retirement Community.
Survivors include daughters, Sharon and Tom Mace, Janet and Glen Ortmeier, Rita and Darrell Bunn, and Mary Jo and Bob Fredrickson Jr., all of West Point, and Jean and Scott Scherer of Rapid City, S.D.; sons, Bruce and Karen of Elkhorn and Robert of West Point; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, George of Lincoln, Lavern “L.J.” and Lola of Highlands Ranch, Colo. and Don of Ventura, Calif.; and sister, Carolyn Sorensen of Roselle, Ill.
Stokely Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
