When St. Boniface Catholic Church (Monterey) holds its parish breakfast this Sunday, there will also be a bake sale, cash raffle, and a quilt raffle.

The quilt is a handmade piece by Bertha Steuter.

Bertha is very much a product of the Monterey community. She was born and raised on the family farm two and half miles southeast of the church. She is the second youngest of 10 children and the only surviving child of Anton and Sophie Kreikemeier. She was baptized and received First Communion, was confirmed and graduated eighth grade all at Monterey.

In 1948 she married Paul Steuter at Monterey. While the newlyweds would raise their family of 12 children on a farm several miles southeast of West Point, Monterey was always central to their social life.

Raising 12 kids left little time for hobbies but needlework was always there. She learned the basics from her mother and used that to sew and patch many clothes for her large family.
