Children are in school to learn many basic skills including reading, writing and math. Their reading material is usually books.
A fictional character from West Point News, Flat Lois, is encouraging first grade students in local schools to go home and ask their parents to open the weekly newspaper to learn what is going on in their community.
The goal is to help students learn to use their reading skills as they open a newspaper.
A visit to West Point-Beemer Elementary School was Lois’ third so far in the last month. She learned that weather does affect children’s school schedules.
As Lois visited the first graders they found out that they would be able to see their story in the West Point News. Their weekly adventure with Lois in the classroom would be featured.
