February 12, 2018, was a day that changed Korey and Maria Janata’s life. That day, they received a diagnosis that their unborn child had spina bifida. It was a day, Maria said, adding, “We realized we didn’t have control over the future.”

At the time, the Janatas had an almost three-year-old daughter, Kyla, and were expecting their second child. The Janatas, who lives near Howells, were doctoring at Franciscan Healthcare during their second pregnancy.
