Anyone passing through West Point on Highway 275 near Cedar Street today will see an empty lot, but for nearly 35 years the site was home to the Neligh House and JD’s Bar & Grill. Both held special memories for many in town.
The original Neligh House wouldn’t have existed without West Point resident Harold Schmader.
In the 1980s, Schmader also owned a motel and a laundry service in town. While operating his motel, Schmader realized his guests had limited places to eat during their stay. Often they would eat at the only dining place open on weekends, the hospital’s cafeteria.
