The 18th annual Relay for Life of the Cuming County Area was Friday night.

Money raised this year totaled $65,251.02.

Contributions came from eight teams, 25 corporate sponsors, 20 individuals in the Grand Club (raising more than $1,000 each) and many people who donated items for the silent auction.

The silent auction raised $3,300 and the Signs of Hope auction raised more than $1,000.

The Relay started as an overnight event held at the West Point Public School track.

With the change to an indoor area a few years ago, the Relay is now a 4-to-5- hour event, but awareness is still focused on raising money for cancer research, education on early detection, and networking information for cancer patients.

This year, more than 1,000 luminaries were lit in memory of a cancer patient or in honor of a survivor.
