The father-son team of Jerome and Dan Steffen manned the aerial ladder truck last Monday evening when the West Point Volunteer Fire Department held a practice burn at 601 W. Park Street. Dan is standing on the truck working the controls while his father – who still prefers to climb the ladder – directs the spray from the nozzle at the top.
Jerome has been a volunteer fireman for 46 years, and Dan is a 22-year member. The practice burn gave several new members of the department a chance to experience entering a smoke-filled home. Also on hand were members of West Point Rescue, who monitored the firemen to help prevent them from overheating.
