It’s hard to imagine a Memorial Day without a service to attend at a local cemetery.

I haven’t missed many over the years. My job dictates that I attend, and I can count on one hand the number of times in my 40-year news career (34 of them here) that I’ve had to give that assignment to another reporter.

But the importance of Memorial Day, and attendance at services, was instilled in me at a young age by parents and grandparents.
