It may have been 60 years ago, but Alan Gatzemeyer remembers the 1962 state cross country meet like it was yesterday.

The Bancroft High School senior not only competed in that race, but Gatzemeyer captured the Class C State Cross Country championship title.

Gatzemeyer, who had the nickname “Rabbit,” clocked a 9:21 to place 1st out of 86 runners. The 1.9 mile race was held on November 2, 1962 at Pioneer Park in Lincoln.

Now, the NSAA holds the state cross country championships in October. Back then, running in November made for a cold race, Gatzemeyer noted.

“I remember the race really well,” Gatzemeyer said.

Gatzemeyer recalls coasting down hills, and using bursts of energy uphill. He also had a game-plan that he stuck to throughout the race, and it paid off.
