Cadet wrestling

Cadet Jake Harriger has a tight squeeze on his opponent, Jaxon Mrsny of Pender, as he collects a pin in a 160-pound match Saturday at Oakland-Craig.

This week was all about mental toughness for West Point-Beemer wrestling. With action on the mat for three consecutive days, Cadet head coach Jason Redmond knew it was going to be a grind.

West Point-Beemer capped of that busy stretch at the Oakland-Craig Invite on Saturday. Sure enough, there were some bumps along the way. But overall, Redmond was pleased with the effort.

“This week was a good challenge for us. It really challenged our mental toughness, which hopefully will help prepare us for the state tournament,” Redmond said.

West Point-Beemer finished 7th overall with 101 team points. The Cadets were anchored by Joe Rodriguez. He captured a championship finish at 220 pounds.

“It was a really special day for Joe. He knocked off some good kids to win his title,” Redmond said. “Plus, it was his birthday.”
