Dutch student Tijs Heuvelmans was inspired by his father’s experience as an exchange student and decided to follow in his father’s footsteps by applying to the Education First exchange program. That step brought Heuvelmans to Wisner on Aug. 1. He is living with Steve and Heather Ott during his exchange year.

Heuvelmans (pronounced who-vel-mans) considers his hometown of Zeist, Netherlands, to be a “small town.” Ziest has a population of 63,000 and is near Utrecht, Netherlands, a city of 347,000. When Heuvelmans found out he’d be living in a town of 1,171 residents, “At first I thought it would be boring, but there’s always something to do here,” he said.
