Wisner will study the cost of at least two methods of treating water for nitrates following action at Monday night’s City Council meeting. The council voted 4-0 to pay JEO Consulting Group $14,900 to evaluate both the ion exchange and the reverse osmosis treatment options. JEO also would make recommendations on where to locate the treatment plant.
JEO Engineer Roger Protzman told the council by video conference call that although ion exchange initially appears to be the less expensive option, his firm’s study will take construction and operating costs into consideration. He said if the need arises to treat for other possible contaminants in the future, reverse osmosis would be a preferred method.
