At the Neihardt State Historic Site in Bancroft Sunday afternoon, a recording of John G. Neihardt’s voice carried the words of Black Elk’s prayer across the grounds. Gathered for the 56th annual Neihardt Day, the crowd of 50 people listened intently to his words.

The recording was the prayer-poem Neihardt wrote after holding significant talks with Lakota medicine man Black Elk at Pine Ridge Reservation in 1931.
