“There’s nothing worse than fighting a fire like that. You feel helpless, but it’s all you can do.”

That was how West Point Fire Chief Tom Stratman summed up the efforts of three fire departments called to a house fire in rural Cuming County Monday morning. The house and contents belonging to the Ken Cooper family were destroyed. It is located at 2089 N Road, which is 5 miles north of West Point and about 4 miles east. Called to the fire were West Point, Beemer and Bancroft.

Cuming County Deputy Sheriff Lonnie Schultz and Stratman were the first to arrive at the scene, where they assisted two young adults trying to get down off a balcony on the front side of the house with flames starting to shoot out of the windows above them.
